DAHA non-profit organization founded to save Antonin Dvorak's 1850s row house residence (1892-95) on East 17th Street in Stuyvesant Square neighborhood of Manhattan from demolition by owner Beth Israel Hospital for an AIDS hospice.
1991
New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission designates Dvorak House a historic landmark. Designation later overturned by New York City Council and house is promptly destroyed despite DAHA-led campaign, including international support from musical luminaries, scholars, preservationists and architects, to save at least façade.
1992
Block of East 17th Street where Dvorak House stood officially co-named Dvorak Place by City of New York.
1997
After persistent five-year fundraising effort, life-size bronze statue of Dvorak by sculptor Ivan Mestrovic installed in Stuyvesant Square Park, steps from site of Dvorak House, and unveiled in festive ceremony attended by more than 1,000, followed by all-Dvorak concert in nearby St. George's Church.
